In this episode, I discuss thyroid physiology with Dr. Anthony Bianco. Dr. Biano is an MD, Ph.D., and professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago. He recently released his book, Rethinking Hypothyroidism.

In this episode, we discuss: -

  • Beyond the basic model of thyroid physiology
  • The significance of T4 and T3
  • Where does T3 come from
  • The challenges with the current medical model of T4 only treatment
  • Why allopathic medicine needs a change in perspective
  • Important aspects of thyroid physiology every frustrated hypothyroid patient needs to understand
  • So much more...

Antonio Bianco M.D. PhD. is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago. His laboratory has helped establish the importance of local control of thyroid hormone activation and inactivation in development, metabolic control, and energy homeostasis. Dr. Bianco’s initial interest in this area formed while he was a fellow at Harvard Medical School. At that time, deiodinases were known to react homeostatically to changes in plasma thyroid hormone levels in order to preserve the intracellular levels of T3. As a fellow under J. Enrique Silva MD, Dr. Bianco built upon this concept making the seminal observation that thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue, a specialized organ that functions to warm up the body, is critically dependent on the local activation of T4 via the type 2 deiodinase (D2). Subsequently, they discovered the molecular link between deiodination and thermogenesis, specifically that the UCP-1 gene, key for brown adipose tissue thermogenesis, is transcriptionally up-regulated by T3. Upon returning to the University of Sao Paulo, Dr. Bianco and his students demonstrated that D2 activation leads to the saturation of the T3 receptors in brown adipose tissue, creating a state of localized thyrotoxicosis. This work laid the groundwork for the modern concept that deiodinases regulate thyroid hormone signaling on a tissue-specific basis without antecedent changes in plasma thyroid hormone levels.

In this episode, I discuss the immune system with Dr. Jaban Moore. Dr. Moore is a Doctor of Chiropractic and Functional Medicine practitioner. In this episode of the podcast, we discuss:

  • What triggers autoimmunity
  • Oral health and autoimmunity

  • What are the drivers of thyroid and other autoimmune disorders

  • Patterns Dr. Jaban sees in a person with thyroid dysfunction
  • The steps you need to take to reduce your symptoms?
  • And more...

Dr. Moore’s passion for restoring health through a multi-therapeutic approach came from a young age when his mother was diagnosed with Diabetes after a 3-year struggle trying to figure out what was causing her health to decline. She was diagnosed only because she was in a car accident and in the ER she was told that she was diabetic. Her doctors noted that it was possibly missed for years. By this point she had gained 100 lbs, her cholesterol was out of control, she had ulcers in her stomach, depression, high blood pressure, and chronic fatigue. Growing up Dr. Moore watched his mother’s condition progress adding new medications and symptoms by the year never curing or making her feel better for long just stabilizing one symptom until the next started. This eventually lead to thyroid cancer and 2 surgeries to remove the cancer. Through this experience, Dr. Moore found his mission to discover the root cause of a condition so that the progression can be stopped so the next person doesn’t have to go through a story like hers.

During chiropractic school when his own health journey began, he started to decline physically rapidly with no known cause at the age of 25. Over the next year, he searched for answers with many different doctors. He was experiencing, fatigue, joint pain, and low testosterone. After not finding many answers from several doctors he was at a conference of functional medicine doctors. It was there he met one who suggested the possibility of Lyme disease. After some testing and further investigation, Dr. Moore was found to be positive for Lyme. This began his journey of learning how to treat it. After consulting several doctors and trying many treatments Dr.Moore found relief and has been symptom-free for over 5 years now.

Dr. Moore’s professional and postdoctoral training includes True Cellular Healing, Chiropractic Plus Kinesiology, Applied Kinesiology, Clinical Kinesiology, Acupuncture, Bio-Resonance Therapy, Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT), Nutrition, Rehabilitation, Functional Medicine and Blood Laboratory Analysis.

In this episode, I interview Annabel Bateman about her new book Let’s Talk Thyroid: Positive & Practical Thyroid Help. We discuss her journey, her struggles with hypothyroidism, and the medical model of addressing hypothyroidism.

It was her struggles and frustrations that led her to write Let’s Talk Thyroid: Positive & Practical Thyroid Help to help others who find out they have hypothyroidism have a roadmap to get started reclaiming their health and improving their thyroid physiology.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Setting goals and expectations for yourself and your health
  • Why your immune system isn't attacking you, it is protecting you
  • Why it is beneficial to "Kiss and make up with your thyroid"
  • Two key factors that every newly diagnosed person needs to understand
  • What people can do to improve their health and thyroid physiology
  • and so much more...

Annabel Bateman is a Hashimoto’s patient, author, advocate & coach. She has learned in 25+ years of living with Hashimoto's that the key is developing a lifestyle that supports (and doesn't stress) her thyroid health.

Drawing on skills learned in previous careers as a lawyer, life coach, family law mediator, and author, Annabel seeks to empower, educate and encourage women with thyroid conditions to develop their own thyroid-friendly lifestyle approach to their health so they can thrive and not just survive.

She hosts a successful podcast, Let’s Talk Thyroid which seeks to spread thyroid awareness and information and is active on social media to spread positive & practical thyroid related information.

Annabel's latest book, Let’s Talk Thyroid: Positive & Practical Thyroid Help, is all about how to live a thyroid-friendly lifestyle. Whilst there is no magic “happy thyroid” formula or protocol, you’ve got to start somewhere. This book is that somewhere.

Annabel lives in Brisbane, Australia with her husband and 3 teenage sons.
